Aloha and welcome to Theodore Roosevelt High School,

It is a tremendous honor to serve as principal of Roosevelt High School. From my first days on campus, I have been inspired by the pride, traditions, and genuine sense of ʻohana that make Roosevelt such a special place. I am grateful to join a community that believes deeply in the potential of every student and is committed to helping every Rough Rider succeed.

As principal, I believe leadership is about bringing people together around a shared purpose and creating a culture where students and adults can learn, grow, and thrive. My commitment is to keep students at the center of every decision while fostering trust, collaboration, continuous improvement, and high-quality learning for all. Together, we will build on Roosevelt's proud legacy, embrace new opportunities, and prepare every Rough Rider for an ever-changing world.

For nearly a century, Theodore Roosevelt High School has been a cornerstone of public education in Hawaiʻi, inspiring generations of Rough Riders to learn, lead, and serve. Founded in 1930 and dedicated on our historic Honolulu campus in 1932, Roosevelt has built a distinguished legacy of academic excellence, innovation, leadership, and service. Our historic campus stands as a symbol of our proud past and our enduring commitment to preparing future generations of learners.

Guided by our vision of College Ready. Career Ready. World Ready., Roosevelt provides an educational experience that extends far beyond the classroom. Through rigorous academics, Advanced Placement and Early College opportunities, Career and Technical Education pathways, award-winning arts and athletics, JROTC, world languages, leadership programs, and a wide range of extracurricular experiences, students discover their passions, develop their talents, as well as gain the knowledge, skills, and confidence to thrive in an ever-changing world.

History

President Theodore Roosevelt High School was established in 1930 after parents demanded a standardized English-speaking high school be added to the already existing English standard Lincoln elementary school. English speech training, as well as a more desirable social standard, could only be found at private schools. President Theodore Roosevelt High School was located at a temporary site, the Territorial Normal School, which trained elementary school teachers for the public schools. This site later became Stevenson Intermediate School in 1937, to alleviate the 1750+ students enrolled at Roosevelt High School.

 

While Roosevelt High School was being constructed at the Nehoa Street site, grades seven, eight, and nine were moved to Lincoln, and added to the sophomore and junior classes to create the first student body. The school's official dedication was on October 27, 1932, where the school is located today. The first graduation class was in 1933, with 52 students.
